GMTK 2024 Postmortem
This was made in just 4 days for the 2024 GMTK Game Jam!
This was my first game jam, and it was an incredible experience all around. Here's a breakdown of the workload:
- I worked with 2 artists, Juusto and RoryMcBig, and a music composer, Shredward.
- Juusto was fully available and therefore was the lead artist, creating the seagull models/textures, as well as a bunch of other models such as the food carts.
- RoryMcBig had less time available, but he created the present food models and did all of the seagull rigging and animations.
- Shredward created 5 absolute earworms of music tracks for the game, being for the main menu, 3 variations for each phase of the game, and a main menu variation that was repurposed as the victory screen music.
- I was the game lead, having put this team together myself. This was the night before the jam started, of course, in classic developer fashion. In all honesty, I was simply planning to solo develop unless I was working with someone I knew, but I'm very glad I went this route. This was a great opportunity to network, improve my ability in working with people and aspects of game development that I might be unfamiliar with, and much more.
- Anyways, I was also the lead game designer and was the only person actually working in Unity. This means that I was responsible for all programming, level design, asset placement, material assignment, AI functionality, animation functionality, etc. Once again, I was expecting to solo develop initially, but I was expecting to do so with a game with an even smaller scope and with probably minimal art effort (as I am... was... not good with the art workflow). This was certainly more than I was expecting to do, but I'm always up for a challenge.
In the end, I am very proud with what was made in the allotted time, and I genuinely learned so much. For instance, to not use that extra 1 hour of time to make quick fixes and accidentally introduce a bug that wasn't in the first submission an hour prior :(
But yeah, this is the version for the jam, but I will likely polish and add new mechanics that I thought of as stretch goals during the jam, so keep an eye out for that! If you'd like to stay up to date, feel free to follow my Twitter or join my Discord for exclusive progress updates.
